Coatings & Surface Treatments

PartsBadger offers a wide range of surface treatments and coatings to enhance the durability, corrosion resistance, conductivity, and appearance of your CNC machined parts. From aerospace-grade anodizing to decorative electroplating, our finishing options meet ISO, ASTM, AMS, and MIL-SPEC standards to ensure performance in even the most demanding industries.

Coating Solutions for Machined Parts

Anodizing

Available on Aluminum and Stainless Steel

Standards: MIL-A-8625 / Type II & III

  • Type II, Class 1 – Clear, non-dyed anodize for corrosion resistance

  • Type II, Class 2 – Dyed anodize for color customization

  • Type III, Class 1 – Hard anodize for extreme wear resistance

  • Type III, Class 2 – Hard anodize with color dye

Anodizing creates a thin oxidized layer that can be dyed in a variety of colors (Clear, Black, Red, Blue, Orange, Purple, Green, Brown). It enhances corrosion resistance, adds cosmetic appeal, and makes the surface non-conductive.

Chromate Conversion / Alodine

  • Standards: MIL-DTL-5541 – Hexavalent Yellow or Trivalent Clear

    • Maintains electrical conductivity
    • Ideal as a primer for powder coating
    • Iridescent/yellow finish that hardens over time for increased corrosion protection

Electropolishing

Standards: ASTM-B-912

For stainless steel parts, electropolishing removes surface iron, enhances chromium/nickel content, and produces a mirror-like finish. Ideal for medical, food-grade, and high-polish applications.

Passivation

Standards: ASTM A967, AMS2700, ASTM A380

Chemical treatment with nitric or citric acid that forms a passive oxide layer, improving corrosion resistance in austenitic, ferritic, and martensitic stainless steels.

Nickel & Silver Electroplating

Electroplating adds a thin metallic layer for:

  • Corrosion resistance
  • Wear resistance
  • Decorative finish
  • Restoring worn or undersized parts

Ceramic Coating

Example: Cerakote H-240 Polymer-Ceramic Composite

Applies to metals, plastics, polymers, and wood. Enhances:

  • Abrasion/wear resistance
  • Corrosion resistance
  • Chemical resistance
  • Impact strength & hardness

Black Oxide

Standards: MIL-DTL-13924 – Class 1 & Class 4

A conversion coating for ferrous materials, stainless steel, copper alloys, zinc, powdered metals, and silver solder. Reduces light reflection, adds mild corrosion resistance, and provides an attractive black finish. Best performance when impregnated with oil or wax.

Dow 9 (Magnesium)

Standards: MIL-M-3171C / Type IV

Produces a dark brown to black protective film for magnesium alloys not suited for Dow 7 treatment.

Dow 7 (Magnesium)

Standards: MIL-M-3171 / Type III

Chemical dip conversion coating for magnesium and its alloys, providing a protective brown coating without altering part dimensions.

Laser Engraving

Custom engraving for part identification, serial numbers, branding, and compliance markings. Works on metals, plastics, and coated parts.
